Don Newcombe became the first African-American to be a pitcher in Major League Baseball when he began pitching for the Brookly Dodgers shortly after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. Newcombe pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers and other teams from 1949 until 1960. He had previously starred in the so-called Negro leagues. Newcombe is the only player in major league history to have won the Most Valuable Player Award, the Cy Young Award, and the Rookie of the Year Award. He was a four-time member of the National League All Star Team, he batted over .300 in four different seasons, and had the most wins of any pitcher in the National League in 1950, 1951, 1955, and 1956
